- RE: re: Motorola Lifestyle Modem problems
-
- Dear Sirs:
-
- I purchased your Lifestyle 28.8 modem and attempted to install it yesterday
- with the following results and problems:
-
- 1. I installed the windows plug and play software as described on the
- insert in the package that came with the
- modem. Everything went well until I dropped to DOS as instructed and tried to
- execute the cassist program as the
- instructions say. I repeatedly got a Window Protection Error #6 and the
- program would not run. I then rebooted the
- computer and, without reentering Windows, again tried to run the cassist
- program from the dos prompt. This time I got a
- message that cassist would not run on a plug and play operating system. [I am
- running a computer with a plug and play
- bios (Intel version 1.21 on a Micron Millennia P-100 with a Micronics HI
- motherboard bios revision #02)but my operating
- system is Windows for Workgroups 3.11, NOT Win95.] I tried to execute the
- cassist program several times with no success.
- I then decided to install the modem into my computer to see what would happen.
-
- 2. I installed the modem card without a problem. When I started the
- computer, it told started the config.sys boot
- sequence and loaded a driver called dwcfgmg.sys and then told me (still during
- the boot sequence) that my modem was
- recognized and properly configured. However, when the boot sequence was
- completed and the system attempted to start
- Windows, the system dropped to DOS and told me I had a Window Protection Error
- #14 and gave me the C: prompt. When I
- tried to run Windows (c:\win), the system told me I had a Windows Protection
- Error #13 and hung completely. I went thru
- this routine several times before I decided to comment out the driver line in
- the config.sys and see what would happen.
-
- 3. When I loaded the config.sys at boot with the above mentioned driver
- line commented out, then I got a message at
- boot that said an IRQ Allocation Error, Motherboard Function #:00" but the
- system did continue to boot until I finally
- got into Windows. I surmised from the message about the IRQ that the modem
- was not configured properly and there was an
- IRQ conflict. I attempted to run the Intel ISA Configuration Utility, but the
- program would not start and gave me a
- message that I needed to load the dwcfgmg.sys driver first to run this
- program. (But I canÆt get to the Intel ISA
- Configuration utility with the driver loaded because Windows wonÆt start!) I
- then did the following.
-
- 4. Through trial and error, I discovered that the default settings that
- the modem was using was Comm 1, IRQ 4. I
- then went into my bios and set my internal comm 1 to comm 3 and changed the
- IRQ for comm 3 to IRQ 10 in Windows control
- panel. This allowed me to use the modem, but I cannot change the default
- settings. I also still get the an IRQ
- Allocation Error, Motherboard Function #:00" when I reboot, but the modem runs
- in Windows.
-
- 5. I logged on to your BBS and read several messages about my problems as
- described above or similar problems. One
- of the messages said to download a program called cardset.exe. I did this and
- followed the instructions to install it
- into the autoexec.bat with the settings AC:\cardset MOT1190 /c1/I4", but when
- the boot process got to this line, the
- system hung and would not execute anything else. I then had to reboot. I
- went through this several times before
- commenting out the line in the autoexec.bat file.
-
- I would like to be able to configure the modem settings by running the Intel
- ISA utility if you can tell me how to get it
- to run. In the alternative, I would be happy to use the cardset program. I
- just want to get rid of the IRQ Allocation
- Error message at startup and be able to configure your fine modem. Other than
- this setup problem, I am happy with your
- modemÆs performance. Please contact me about this. I would prefer e-mail at
- 74443.2450@compuserve.com if you can tell
- me what to do via e-mail. If you need to speak to me, please e-mail me a time
- to call and a person to call. The
- computer is in my home and during the day I am at the office. However, I will
- make arrangements to be at my computer at
- almost any time that is convenient for you if you will just let me know when
- to call. Thanks for your attention to this
- matter.
-
-
-
-
- Sincerely yours,
-
